Paul Speaks to the People

1 “Brothers and fathers, hear the defence that I now make before you.”

2 And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. And he said:

3 “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day. 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, 5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 “As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ 8 And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ 9 Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. 10 And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.’ 11 And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.

12 “And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that very hour I received my sight and saw him. 14 And he said, ‘The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth; 15 for you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptised and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’ 17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’ 19 And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. 20 And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I myself was standing by and approving and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’ 21 And he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

Paul and the Roman Tribune

22 Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.” 23 And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, saying that he should be examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this. 25 But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” 27 So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” 29 So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also was afraid, for he realised that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him.

Paul Before the Council

30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.

PSALMS 146 and 147

Put Not Your Trust in Princes
1
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
    I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,

    in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.

When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;

    on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

    whose hope is in the Lord his God,

who made heaven and earth,

    the sea, and all that is in them,

who keeps faith forever;

    who executes justice for the oppressed,

    who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

    the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

    the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the sojourners;

    he upholds the widow and the fatherless,

    but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10

The Lord will reign forever,

    your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Praise the Lord!

He Heals the Brokenhearted

1

Praise the Lord!

For it is good to sing praises to our God;

    for it is pleasant,and a song of praise is fitting.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem;

    he gathers the outcasts of Israel.

He heals the brokenhearted

    and binds up their wounds.

He determines the number of the stars;

    he gives to all of them their names.

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;

    his understanding is beyond measure.

The Lord lifts up the humble;

    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;

    make melody to our God on the lyre!

He covers the heavens with clouds;

    he prepares rain for the earth;

    he makes grass grow on the hills.

He gives to the beasts their food,

    and to the young ravens that cry.

10

His delight is not in the strength of the horse,

    nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,

11

but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,

    in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!

    Praise your God, O Zion!

13

For he strengthens the bars of your gates;

    he blesses your children within you.

14

He makes peace in your borders;

    he fills you with the finest of the wheat.

15

He sends out his command to the earth;

    his word runs swiftly.

16

He gives snow like wool;

    he scatters frost like ashes.

17

He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs;

    who can stand before his cold?

18

He sends out his word, and melts them;

    he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.

19

He declares his word to Jacob,

    his statutes and rules to Israel.

20

He has not dealt thus with any other nation;

    they do not know his rules.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 145

Great Is the Lord

A Song of Praise. Of David.

I will extol you, my God and King,

    and bless your name forever and ever.

Every day I will bless you

    and praise your name forever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

    and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,

    and shall declare your mighty acts.

On the glorious splendour of your majesty,

    and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,

    and I will declare your greatness.

They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness

    and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,

    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The Lord is good to all,

    and his mercy is over all that he has made.

10

All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,

    and all your saints shall bless you!

11

They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom

    and tell of your power,

12

to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,

    and the glorious splendour of your kingdom.

13

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

    and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[The Lord is faithful in all his words

    and kind in all his works.]

14

The Lord upholds all who are falling

    and raises up all who are bowed down.

15

The eyes of all look to you,

    and you give them their food in due season.

16

You open your hand;

    you satisfy the desire of every living thing.

17

The Lord is righteous in all his ways

    and kind in all his works.

18

The Lord is near to all who call on him,

    to all who call on him in truth.

19

He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;

    he also hears their cry and saves them.

20

The Lord preserves all who love him,

    but all the wicked he will destroy.

21

My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,

    and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
